Bold gold monogram cards

November 24, 2009 by Jenni · Leave a Comment

stat-sat.nov09.wood-monogramThis weekend we’re hosting one of the year’s last Stationery Saturday events at the Lunalux studio. Saturday, November 28, 11a.m.-6p.m., we’ll use bold wood type to print gold monogrammed notecards. You can look over my shoulder as I set the type and run the antique letterpress, or do a little shopping while I do the heavy lifting. The cost: $29 for 10 cards with matching envelopes. We remodeled our shop back in early October and the shelves are full of tempting treats, so this is an ideal time to shop, even if monogrammed notecards aren’t on your list. We have a lovely selection of holiday cards; Moleskine datebooks and beautiful calendars; and tons of unique gifts and stocking stuffers too. So after the Thanksgiving roller coaster of turkey coma followed by Black Friday shopping adrenaline, we hope you’ll stop by Lunalux.

(drum roll please) Introducing Morgan!

November 18, 2009 by Jenni · 2 Comments

morgan.internWe’re happy to introduce Morgan, the newest Lunalux intern. Morgan is a recent MCAD graduate, and has a wealth of experience in print-making and paper-making (she’s been interning for a while at Cave Paper). She’s a real gal about town, perhaps you’ve seen her waiting tables down the block at Joe’s Garage, or working the coat check at First Avenue. She’s been helping out around here for a couple of months, and we are thrilled to have her on board. She has a great attitude and we appreciate her cheerful, creative energy. You can see pictures of some of her previous artwork on her blog (which she doesn’t update very often, but nobody’s perfect). Until now, we’ve kept Morgan busy with the basics like packing orders and assembling products for the shop. But yesterday we finally set her loose in the type department, and she created a couple of great cards that we’re now selling in the Lunalux studio store. Both cards shown below were printed on our Vandercook proof press, using a combination of wood and lead type. So funny! We look forward to seeing more additions to her series.

Lunalux at MCBA’s Book Arts Festival

November 12, 2009 by Jenni · Leave a Comment

Picture 13We hope to see you at the Book Arts Festival this Saturday at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. MCBA will be brimming with local artisans (including Lunalux) selling bookish wares: letterpress-printed cards, hand-made papers and journals, fine art prints, limited edition artist books, and other beautiful hand-crafted paper-related treasures. Some exhibitors will be demonstrating their crafts, and there will be hands-on activities for the kids too. This is the 8th year for this event, and every year it’s an absolute pleasure to participate. I would be there even if it weren’t my job! It’s also a good opportunity to check out MCBA’s facilities – explore the space, poke around the shop, linger in the gallery, and pick up a class schedule.

letterpress.bricks.postcardIf you’re on the Lunalux snail mail list, you should have received a postcard from us recently, announcing the Book Arts Festival along with upcoming Stationery Saturday dates. It’s been a few months since we sent out a mailer, and we’re pretty pleased with how this one turned out. It’s letterpress-printed in blue and cool gray inks, on light gray felt-finish cover. The brick pattern in the background is from a photo I took this summer, while waiting at a bus stop in Uptown. If you’re not on our mailing list but would like to receive postcards from Lunalux in the future, you can use this contact form to send us a message with your street address; we’ll add you to the list for our next mailing.

The 8th Annual Book Arts Festival takes place Saturday, November 14, 2009, at Minnesota Center for Book Arts (1011 Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis), 10a.m.-5p.m. Free, family-friendly and open to all! Bring quarters for the parking meters, just in case the free parking lot is full. You’ll find directions and more information about MCBA on their website at www.mnbookarts.org.

Design + Print: leafy invites for a fall wedding

November 10, 2009 by Jenni · 1 Comment

autumn.letterpress.wedding.inviteLuanne and Roger wanted a very simple invitation for their at-home wedding reception last month. Browsing through sample books at the Lunalux studio, they fell for this earthy paper combo we used recently for Leah and Jeanie’s wedding invitations – brown kraft envelopes, paired with burlap-textured card stock. Working with that warm color palette, we created a stand-alone invitation (no response card needed, because the invitation includes an R.S.V.P. telephone number) featuring sans-serif text and autumn leaves. Perfect for October nuptials! We also created smaller notecards imprinted with the leaves only, for the couple to use as thankyou notes when they returned from the honeymoon. Everything is letterpress-printed in orange and sepia inks on 100% recycled papers.
