Stationery Saturday: The Wednesday Edition!

November 30, 2010 by Jenni · Leave a Comment

Stationery Saturdays have been such a hit lately, we’ve added a couple extra dates to our December schedule. This week, we’re mixing things up with Stationery Saturday: The Wednesday Edition! We’ll be creating print-to-order monogram note-cards on Wednesday December 1, from 5:00 to 9:00p.m. Though it’s on a weeknight rather than a weekend, it’s the usual drill: pop into our Loring Park studio to view the options in person and place your order. You can enjoy coffee and homemade cookies while we print your personalized stationery, or make plans to pick up at a later date. The cost if just $29 for 10 cards (additional cards are just $2 each). For this special Wednesday event, we’re dipping into our collection of vintage lead monograms. There will be three designs to choose from, and three paper options. Monograms will be letterpress-printed with black ink on 4.25×5.5-inch folded cards. And while you’re in the shop, take a look at our fantastic selection of holiday cards. All boxed holiday cards will be on sale during this event – 15% off regular price. For more details, plus information about upcoming Stationery Saturday dates and designs, take a look at our Stationery Saturday page.

Guest Curator at Felt & Wire

Now that Lunalux is selling its wares at feltandwireshop.com, it’s a treat to see how this team of paper professionals (Felt & Wire is operated by the folks from Mohawk Paper) is constantly working to keep shoppers and vendors engaged. Such as the guest curator program. Each week, they ask a different design or stationery professional to create a themed collection, which is featured on the front page of the site. This week, the guest curator is… me! It was harder than I thought it would be to develop a theme and assemble a pleasing assortment of products that support it. Some weeks the collections focus on concrete concepts like a specific color. But me, I went abstract – Nostalgia (click here to view the complete collection). And I am excited to see my very favorite item from the collection (and my very favorite holiday card of the year, incidentally) featured on the main page of the marketplace: a. favorite design’s vintage arrow sign card, with its improvised capital “I”. This image is like the tree in the Charlie Brown Christmas special, but for type geeks: hopeful despite its short-comings. We hope you’ll check out our collection at Felt & Wire Shop, and keep an eye on the guest curator slot for weeks to come, it’s a pretty fun feature.

Stationery Saturday: tri-fold stationery sheets

November 17, 2010 by Jenni · Leave a Comment

We’ve never printed anything like this for Stationery Saturday before: long narrow stationery sheets that fold in thirds to fit into colorful little 4bar envelopes. They’re big enough to feed through your computer printer (perfect for a sophisticated holiday letter or party invitation), but still a good size for a hand-written thank-you note. We love the bright, joyful designs, the unique format, and the modern sans serif lettering we’re using for the imprint. Here’s how this works: November 20, 11a.m.-6p.m., we’re offering personalized letterpress-printed stationery at very affordable prices ($29 for 10, $39 for 15, or $49 for 20 sheets & envelopes). Four pre-printed designs will be available: magenta rosette, orange fleurs, goldenrod tiles, or purple thistle. Customers get the name or phrase of their choice (maximum of 25 characters/spaces) imprinted with vintage sans serif lead type, in pale gray ink, just below the icon. We’ll package your personalized stationery with coordinating envelopes and a letterpress-printed tag. Ideal for gifting! You can watch and/or shop while we do the printing (wait times vary from 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how busy we are), or place your order, enjoy a cookie and a browse in the shoppe, then pick up your finished stationery at a later date. It’s up to you.

If you’re loving these designs but can’t visit our studio on November 20, you can order online. We’ve added this weekend’s choices to the Lunalux shop at Felt & Wire – all four designs are available here, along with loads of our other greeting cards.

If you’re the Facebook type, you can RSVP via the Stationery Saturday event listing on the Lunalux Facebook page. We’ve really been working the FB lately, and would love it if you’d help us spread the word.

We’re also planning THREE Stationery Saturday events for the month of December (including “Stationery Saturday, the Wednesday Edition” on the first of December) and we’re planning some really fun stuff for each event, including outside vendors and discounts on select products. You’ll find details about this weekend’s event, and other upcoming Stationery Saturdays, on the Stationery Saturday page.

Design + Print: custom holiday photo cards

November 17, 2010 by Jenni · Leave a Comment

Each year, a few clients come to Lunlux for custom holiday cards. In recent years, we’ve seen a strong trend towards flat cards to accommodate photographs – a format we’re thrilled to work with! These cards can pack a lot of personality, and are typically less expensive than folded greeting cards. As these examples illustrate, we work closely with our clients to create cards suited to their specific photo, tailoring the design to uncommon sizes or drawing inspiration from the snapshot’s theme or color scheme. All the custom holiday cards shown were designed and letterpress-printed in our Loring Park studio, and our crafty customers took care of photo reproduction and mounting. Though we will, with the magic of a glue stick, mount the photos for you.

Because everything we do is custom, we’re adept at catering to unique specifics. Whether you want to incorporate text you’ve written (Mrs. Rasley wrote the charming prose on her and Ron’s star-studded monarch flat), use your favorite font (the snow-flakey card, below left, uses Bernhard Modern, the same font we used years ago on this couple’s wedding stationery), or see your family photo’s colors reflected in our printed work (on the buckslip below with orange wood-type-style lettering, the ink matches the trim on the tot’s jersey), we’re up for the challenge.

All the cards shown here were printed on Strathmore Writing wove-finish bristol cover, which feels very substantial but isn’t too expensive. But we work with a wide variety of stocks, from plush cotton to earthy recycled to vibrant colors. If you’d like to learn more about our custom design and printing services, you can browse our blog archives or visit the custom page of our website. And there’s still a bit of time for holiday or New Year cards this year. Get in touch with Jenni at our studio (our contact page has all the vitals) to schedule a consultation.

Lunalux in Metro magazine

Metro Magazine November 2010 - page 72 - Survival KitWe’re thrilled to see two cards from our shop included in the Survival Kit feature in Metro Magazine. When they sent an intern over earlier this fall to pick up a few cards for a photo shoot, we weren’t sure how they’d be used. But if you pick up the November issue of the magazine, you’ll find us on page 72, just inside the back cover. Our “You’re Pretty” card, letterpress-printed here in our Minneapolis studio, is pictured along with a clever birthday card from the Chicago letterpress studio a. favorite design. We’re down in the corner, between the McDonald’s chicken sandwich and a bottle of wine. That’s right, folks: modest red wine, a humble fast-food sandwich, and letterpress-printed greeting cards are KEY to your cultural satisfaction this month! You can view this feature online at the Metro Magazine website. If you need a “You’re Pretty” card but can’t make it to Loring Park, you can order this card (and many of our other designs) through our new online shop at Felt & Wire. It’s just a click away. And check out our blog archives to read about other media mentions we’ve garnered.
