Another Saturday, another Stationery Saturday

Friday, July 18th, 2008

This Saturday, Lunalux shoppers again have the opportunity to get personalized stationery, letterpress-printed right before your eyes. for just $29. We’re printing the same design that we used last week, but this time with aqua ink.

This will be our last Stationery Saturday event for a while, because weekends for the rest of the summer are so full of weddings, travel, visitors and State Fairs. We’ll plan to do it again in September.

You can read all about Stationery Saturday, a semi-regular event at the studio, on the Stationery Saturday page. If you’d like to receive e-mail updates about future events at the store and other studio news, visit the Lunalux blog and sign up for the email newsletter.

Introducing: Stationery Saturdays!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

You’re invited to participate in an exciting new event at Lunalux this weekend: Stationery Saturdays. This Saturday, June 7, we’re offering customized stationery printed while you wait! For this inaugural event, we’re printing 4×9 buckslip notecards with up to three characters, and a decorative stripe of your choice. While we print your cards on our Vandercook proof press, you get a one-on-one demonstration of letterpress printing. Personalized stationery is a fun treat for yourself, but also makes a great gift – consider a set for the dad in your life (Father’s Day is June 15) or someone who’s graduating from high school or college this spring.

Stationery Saturday runs this Saturday during regular store hours, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Cards will be printed in black ink on natural white card stock, and paired with your choice of matching or contrasting envelopes (click on the image above for a larger view of this week’s design). The price: just $29.00 for a set of 10, and additional cards can be printed for $2.00 each. Prices don’t include sales tax.

We’ve done a couple of test runs with friends and family, and received great feedback from all who participated. It’s a lot of fun, and a great deal to boot! If all goes well, we will host Stationery Saturdays at least once a month, each time with a new design. Watch our blog or updates!

Design + Print: my first business card

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

trout-letterpress-calling-card.pngDo you remember how proud you felt when you got your first real business cards? Your name and contact information printed all official – a sure sign of adulthood! That’s why I thought it was so cool when Cathy asked me to work with her to create business cards for her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend as college-graduation gifts. What a great way to congratulate someone on becoming a real live grown up!

Working long distance via e-mail, I developed designs that suited both graduates. Cathy wanted a fish on Rebecca’s card, and an elk on Justin’s. Both simple one-color designs are letterpress-printed on earth-friendly papers (Justin’s on a krafty recycled card, Rebecca’s on a tree-free cotton stock).

Looking for a memorable gift for the soon-to-be graduate in your life? Consider custom letterpress-printed paper goods! Notecards or stationery are a great accessory for someone headed off to college or grad school, so they can stay in touch with friends and family afar. Stationery and calling cards are also ideal for someone entering the job market, allowing the job-seeker to present themselves in a professional manner and write that ever-important follow-up after an interview. Design + Print: Lettra business cards

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

swansoncallingcard.pngWe’ve been printing wedding invitations on Lettra, a paper created for letterpress printing, for a while now – brides love the luxurious feel of the paper, and it really shows off the tactile quality of letterpress printing. More recently, we’ve been printing business cards on this soft, 100% cotton card stock. The first card we printed on Lettra was for Suzy & Kent, who’ve been friends of the studio since we created wedding invitations for the daughter in 2002. This winter, Suzy asked us to create calling cards with their contact information in Minnesota and at their new vacation home. The cards are letterpress-printed in black and bright blue.

estrellaletterpressbusinesscard.pngMost recently, we designed and letterpress-printed business cards for Nissa, a massage therapist and esthetician. Working with her existing logo, we created elegant, balanced business card in black and bright pink. Though you can’t see it in the picture at the left (do to click on that image for a larger view), there’s more information printed on the back of the card – Lettra is thick enough that a moderate impression on one side won’t result in unsightly show-through on the reverse.

First Anniversary: paper

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

meghanhale.pngAges ago, someone made a list of traditional presents for wedding anniversaries. We all know that 40th wedding anniversaries are honored with silver stuff, and for the 50th we give gold. But would you ever think that tradition dictates a gift of bronze or appliances for the eighth anniversary? As stationers, we at Lunalux are particularly glad that the first anniversary is acknowledged with gifts of paper.

So when David Hale came into our store and asked me to work on personal stationery for his wife as a gift for their first anniversary, I was both happy to help and impressed that he was honoring the tradition of giving paper to his wife Meghan on their first wedding anniversary. I hand-wrote an elegant note explaining that we were at her service to create custom stationery to her liking, and David gave that card to her on their anniversary. During subsequent meetings with Meghan, we considered many different motifs, fonts and color combinations. Ultimately we decided on a design that honors her Irish heritage: a shamrock pressed, without any ink, deep into thick white paper (we sometimes refer to this as “blind embossing” even though it’s really not), with her name printed in gold ink. We also printed the same shamrock on bright green A7 envelopes. In the end, Meghan was thrilled with her personal stationery, and we give David a gold star for his thoughtfulness!
